Local planning

Newcastle install considerations

Coastal, inner-city and lake estate properties each bring their own constraints. These are the ones we plan around most often here.

Coastal and carport mounting

Salt air and driving rain shape where the charger goes. Where the layout allows we pick a sheltered position, use outdoor-rated hardware and detail the enclosure and cable entries for exposure.

Strata, basement and townhouse garages

Inner Newcastle apartment and townhouse garages usually need owners corporation approval and agreement on where the supply is taken from. We prepare the documentation committees ask for.

Sloping blocks and long runs

New Lambton hillside homes and acreage around Fletcher or Toronto often mean a long distance from board to parking. Cable size is set by voltage drop over that run, not by the charger alone.

Older switchboards in the established suburbs

Mayfield and Toronto homes can still have ceramic fuses, limited spare ways or no RCD protection. We assess the board before quoting so board work and charger work are priced separately.

Rooftop solar is common here

Plenty of homes here already export during the day. A solar-aware charger can divert that surplus into the car instead, which is usually worth more than the feed-in rate.

Second EV in the household

Dual-car garages in the newer estates are easier to plan for up front — power sharing or load management now avoids re-running a circuit later.

Newcastle install styles

Built into the home, not bolted onto it.

Charger placement, cable runs and conduit are planned around how you actually park — so the finished install looks like it was always part of the house.

The case for a home charger

Why install a home charger

Most EV charging happens at home. The quality of that setup defines the ownership experience.

Charge up to 10x faster

A 7kW wall charger adds around 40km of range an hour. A standard power point adds about 10km.

Run on your own solar

Plenty of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie roofs already export at midday. Divert that surplus into your car instead.

Safe, permanent wiring

Dedicated circuits, RCBO protection and load management replace extension leads and overloaded outlets.

Cheaper every kilometre

Scheduled overnight charging on your retailer's cheaper window usually costs far less than public DC fast charging — check your plan for the rate that applies to you.

FAQs

Questions before you book

How long does a home EV charger installation take in Newcastle?+

Most standard installations are completed in three to four hours. Installations that require a switchboard upgrade or a long cable run can take a full day.

Do I need three phase power?+

No. A single phase 7kW charger adds roughly 40km of range per hour, which covers overnight charging for almost every Newcastle household. Three phase 11kW or 22kW is worth it for high daily distances or two EVs.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?+

Only if it lacks capacity, space or modern protection. Older Newcastle homes often do. We assess your board before quoting so there are no surprises on installation day.

Can I charge from my solar?+

Yes. Solar-aware chargers divert surplus generation to your vehicle rather than exporting it, which is usually the cheapest energy you will ever put in your car.

Is the installation compliant and certified?+

Every installation is carried out by a licensed New South Wales electrical contractor to AS/NZS 3000 requirements, and a certificate of compliance is issued on completion.

What does a home charger cost to install?+

It depends on the charger you choose, how far the cable has to run from the switchboard, and whether any switchboard work is needed first. We quote a fixed, itemised price before any work starts, so the number you approve is the number you pay.

Can a charger be installed in a strata townhouse or apartment garage?+

Usually yes, where you have an allocated private space. Owners corporation approval is normally the longest part, so we supply the installation details and documentation the committee asks for. Requirements differ from scheme to scheme, so check your own by-laws.

Is an outdoor charger a problem in a coastal carport?+

Chargers we install are rated for outdoor use. In salt-air coastal locations we still choose a sheltered position where the layout allows, keep the unit out of driving rain and direct afternoon sun, and use suitable enclosures and cable entries.
